About MeKer Xavier Roussel studied with Bougereau and Jules Lefebvre at the Academie Julian, but it was the Synthesist doctrine, preached by Serusier and Gauguin, that was to have the most powerful effect on his work. Here he imbues his scene with the sinuous line of the Synthesists. The two female figures have a nightmarish quality; with their small eyes, tightly pulled back hair and severe clothes, they seem vaguely threatening and we almost feel pity for the small, supplicant dog.
More About Me
Rousseau was a French follower of Synthesist artists like Gauguin, who distinguished their work from Impressionism.
