About MeHeron lived in St. Ives as a child. Later in 1944/45 he befriended several artists working in St. Ives including Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. He began writing art criticism during this period and one of the first articles that he published was on Ben Nicholson. In 1956, Heron purchased 'Eagles Nest' near St. Ives, where he lived until his death in 1999. He wrote an article on St. Ives and its quality of light.
In 1969 Heron wrote; "Space in colour. To me, this is still the most profound experience which painting has to offer". In this picture, the artist is exploring such an experience on a large scale.
More About Me
If you're lucky enough to see this piece in real life (Gallery 17, hint hint!) you will be able to see the surface of the paint which is painted in an impasto style, meaning 'thickly applied'.
