About MeLike Queen Victoria, Prince Albert admired Phillip's work and his patronage helped Phillip's career enormously. Given this fact it was logical that when the Aberdeen Town Council decided to commission a portrait of the Prince Consort, they should approach this local, but by now highly acclaimed, artist.

Phillip painted for them this grand, full-length portrait of Albert standing in a Scottish landscape with Balmoral Castle in the distance. Albert had reputedly become more 'Highland than the Highlanders' and Phillip reinforces this image by portraying the Prince Consort as a Scottish landowner, resplendent in kilt and attended by his hound.

Phillip's portrait of Prince Albert was complete by the end of the year and he exhibited it at the Royal Academy the following Spring. That the portrait was judged a success (by the Royal Family at least) is proved by the fact that a smaller copy was displayed at Balmoral, where it remains to this day.

More About Me
Prince Albert was very interested in Scottish culture and was said to be "more Highland than the Highlanders" How does John Phillip reinforce this impression in this portrait?
