Historic Title
  • A Woman
  • A Negress
About MeWith Victor Pasmore and William Coldstream, Rogers founded the Euston Road School in 1937. This school of painting sought to return to commonplace themes - landscapes, still lifes, portraits and nudes. They rejected modernist theories of Abstraction and Surrealism and adopted a more accurate recording of the visual world.

This portrait was painted at the time when Rogers was a member of the Euston Road Group. It illustrates his quiet and intimate art at this date, before he, like Pasmore, turned to Abstraction.
Re-framing the Collection

Previously entitled A Negress. The title of this painting was initially changed to 'A Woman' to demonstrate AAGM's commitment to remove offensive language from object titles.

Thanks to research via the ArtUK Art Detective service the sitter can now be identified as Imogen.  Roger's portrait bears a striking similarity to a portrait called Imogen by Frank Graham Bell in Derby Museum and Gallery collections.
