About MeFrom 1932, Samuel John Peploe's health was increasingly on the decline. Nevertheless, he found many subjects to paint over the last few years of his life around Scotland. This work depicts Comrie in Perth and Kinross, an area he had first painted thirty years earlier.
In some of his final landscape works a freer, vaguely expressionist approach to his subject is noticeable. The structural qualities of previous landscapes have disappeared here and instead, Peploe renders the limbs of the trees with broad, swooping, unhidden brushstrokes. He has bypassed bright, pure colour for more muted, tonal blues, greens and browns to give a sense of atmosphere and setting.
