About MeKnown for her fantastic and often outrageous designs, Clarice Cliff has become synonymous with the Art Deco style. On leaving school she was apprenticed in a local pottery and learned to paint free-hand. In 1916, she moved to A. J. Wilkinson’s factory in Burslem where she was promoted to the design studio. The Bizarre range, which was to make her name, was first launched in 1928. This plate from the Bizarre range is decorated with the Coral Firs pattern.
Aberdeen born, Betty Clunas (1929-2012) is thought to have bought the plate from the Rendezvous Gallery in the city. She lived near the Gallery from the 1980s onwards and often purchased items there. She brought this plate home in triumph having paid £100 for it.
Betty Clunas served as the Chair of the Friends of Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums. She had a fondness for design between 1890 and 1940, and especially liked collecting objects synonymous with the Art Deco period.
