The early work of the Bloomsbury Group was at the forefront of modern British art. This work, however, was painted much later, in the 1930s, when Grant and Vanessa Bell were living together in Sussex. At this time the Sussex landscape became Grant's subject matter.
This sketch for 'Barn by the Pond' is typical of Grant's later works, which were painted in a much freer manner.
