About MeRobert Brough studied in Paris, then spent time in Brittany, where he came under the influence of the Synthesistes, the most famous of whom was Paul Gauguin. Their work emphasised linear patterning, flat forms, rhythm and movement. They depicted the people and countryside of Brittany, finding inspiration in the traditional costume and particularly in the distinctive regional headgear of the Breton women. Brough's delight in patterning can be seen in this pastel study in the girl's dress and his delight in sinuous line which he uses across the entire composition.
More About Me
Brough creates a lively and classically “flat” scene which celebrates traditional dress. The pastel patterning is particularly effective as is the sun lighting which does provide a degree of depth.
