Katherine Grainger
Glasgow, Scotland, born 1975
Hailed as an inspirational figure in the world of rowing, Katherine took up the sport in 1993 whilst studying at the University of Edinburgh and spent her university breaks training on the River Dee in Aberdeen. She excelled at the sport and just three years later was awarded the Eva Bailey Trophy as most outstanding female athlete, going on to win her first international gold medal at the U23 World Rowing Championships in 1997.
Katherine’s career spanned two decades, competing at both national and international events and securing eight World Championship medals, six of them gold. The highlight of her career came at the 2012 London Olympic Games when she and her teammate, Anna Watkins, won Olympic Gold in the double sculls. Katherine retired in 2016 after winning silver at the Rio Olympic Games. She was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the Scottish Sports Awards and states that her advice is “to live life with passion: always seeking new experiences and always refusing to accept limits.”
