About MeLetter from Clemence Bonnet to James McBey dated 21 May 1942, in the originial postmarked envelope. The letter was sent care of Mrs. Loeb in Philadelphia, and explains that this would be Clemence's last attempt to write, as her letters kept on going astray and she wondered what was happening to them. Clemence explains that the last she had heard from the McBeys was through Ruth Maxwell who had received a card from Marguerite, and tells him that Tangier is now "a new world, a cruel new world." She also worries for James and Marguerite's safety while the War was spreading, and explains that she had not been to Jalobey for a while. This was because she now lived in town (35 Rue do Vipus), but Clemence still saw "Legg" from time to time who said that Jalobey was fine.

Clemence also talks about her family explaining that her, "daughter has grown up now and is much taller than her mother!" She also tells McBey that her parents were doing well and briefly mentions her sister. Clemence then urges McBey to write soon, asks if he has found a painting studio yet, and sends her best wishes to Marguerite and Mrs. Loeb.

This object is part of an archive that belonged to Marguerite McBey. As a result of her generosity, Aberdeen Art Gallery holds the largest archive of James McBey's work, including prints, drawings, sketchbooks, oil paintings and memorabilia such as this letter.
