About MeWorn at the Langstane Kirk, on Union Street, this dress was made and worn by an Aberdonian bride who was a student at the School of Domestic Science, which was part of the Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen.
It is made of plain ivory satin and cut in a princess line. It has long, narrow, pointed sleeves, a square neckline and is slightly pleated at the shoulders and at the waist. For decoration, the bride chose a long sash with a bow at the centre, which served as a belt. The outfit was worn with a tulle veil, machine-embroidered in chain stitch flower motifs and held in place with a crown of ivory velvet flowers.
After 1945, when men started to be discharged from the services, more weddings started taking place. As rationing was still fresh in people's minds, home dressmaking became very popular. Many brides bought their own materials and made their own wedding dresses, which was more economical than buying a ready-made dress.
