About MeAlan Caiger-Smith's speciality is tin glazed earthenware and lustre ware and he has written books about these techniques.

He studied at the Central School of Art and Design in London and he established the Aldermaston Pottery in 1955.

The striking painted decoration on this tin-glazed earthenware bowl resembles calligraphy and is typical of his work. The bowl has a lustrous surface caused by a layer of pure metal on the surface of the glaze.
