About MeThe Aberdeen artist Robert Brough studied at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, where he began to develop a unique style; taking inspiration form the French Impressionists and the Glasgow Boys. He also spent time painting in Paris, Brittany and Morocco. His technical brushwork contributed to his ability to capture the moment in his works and saw him become successful, particularly as a portrait painter, before his early death in a train crash in 1905.

The sitter, Alexander Ogilivie, was the master of Robert Gordon's Hospital for Boys 1872-1881 and on the conversion to a college he was appointed Headmaster. He died in 1901.
