As well as studying at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, Aberdeen born artist Robert Brough took many trips abroad, exploring different movements and styles of painting and drawing. In Paris he employed the methods of the French Impressionists Monet and Degas; in Brittany he took inspiration from the Nabis and the Synthesistes and in London he learned how to paint society portraits very much in the style of those of his close friend John Singer Sargent. Brough died tragically in a train crash aged only 33.
