About MeJohn Fleming, a Dundee-born timber merchant, moved to Aberdeen in 1891, at which point the city had a more promising industry than Dundee, where he had set up business in 1872. He was knighted in 1908 as a result of his extensive participation in the Aberdeen Civic Board, including acting as Lord Provost of Aberdeen for four years. A liberal in politics he became the candidate for that party for the South Aberdeen constituency in 1916. Travelling was Fleming's passion and to his luck he found that his timber work brought him to South America and the Far East quite regularly. After his retirement he travelled for pleasure with his wife and died on a trip to Pretoria in 1925.

As well as studying at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, Aberdeen born artist Robert Brough took many trips abroad, exploring different movements and styles of painting and drawing. In Paris he employed the methods of the French Impressionists Monet and Degas; in Brittany he took inspiration from the Nabis and the Synthesistes and in London he learned how to paint society portraits very much in the style of those of his close friend John Singer Sargent. Brough died tragically in a train crash aged only 33.
