About MeEdouard Vuillard's career spanned a wealth of artistic movements, including Post-Impressionism, Fauvism and Cubism. Yet he rejected the more radical of these movements and together with his friend Pierre Bonnard, came to be regarded as one of the last Impressionists and earned the epithet of Intimiste, due to a preference for painting intimate interiors.

In this scene, the unusual viewpoint which reveals a vast expanse of ceiling and the daring banishment of the human element to the back of the room, recall the random framing of the photographic lens. Indeed, Vuillard often used photographs as an aid to his painting.
