About MeSir William MacTaggart was born in Loanhead in Midlothian and studied at Edinburgh College of Art. He lived and worked in Edinburgh for much of his life. He was influenced by Georges Rouault, the French artist, and other Expressionist painters. During his lifetime, he took several trips to the South of France with his friend and fellow artist William Crozier.
In 'Mougins, Alpes Maritimes', the rich, earthy colours are applied thickly. MacTaggart focuses on conveying the drama of the view, in the mountain which soars upwards and almost disappears into the clouds. He also pays attention to the natural cycles of the landscape. A large tree dominates the space to the left, while smaller roots sprout in the foreground.
