About MeAfter studying at the Slade School of Art, Gwen John spent some months in Paris at the Académie Carmen, where James McNeill Whistler taught, before returning to London in 1899. In 1904 she went back to France for good and that summer began an affair with the famous sculptor Auguste Rodin, who was to have an important effect on her work.

In 1913 John moved to the suburban village of Meudon, where Rodin lived and there she came to concentrate on small-scale portraits and still-lifes. Her early works on paper are meticulously executed but later they became notably more spontaneous. Her last watercolours and gouaches - such as this study of ivy leaves - seem utterly French; they are opaque, brightly coloured, almost abstracted images.

More About Me

In contrast to her calm painting style, Gwen John was a defiant, contrary and proud character. She wooed famous sculptor Auguste Rodin and owned a cat called 'Edgar Quinet'!
