Ian Black

Inverness, Scotland, born 1941
About MeThe former competitive swimmer and Aberdeenshire schoolteacher, Ian Black, holds the record as the youngest recipient of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. Ian was nominated for the Sports Personality of the Year award following his success in the 1958 European Championships in Budapest where he won three gold medals at the age of 17 for the 400 metres, the 1500 metres freestyle and 200 metres butterfly.

In 1959, Ian set a new world record in the 400-metre individual medley, and throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s he represented Great Britain at the Olympics, European Championships and the Commonwealth Games. In celebration of his Scottish roots, Ian would proudly wear a MacGregor tartan dressing gown at the poolside when competing. As well as excelling in the water, Ian was a formidable rugby union player and in 2002 he became one of the first fifty Scottish men and women inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame.
