About MeJames Cumming was an important, but often underestimated, contributor to Scottish Art in the 20th century. He studied and then taught at Edinburgh College of Art and was a painter, philosopher and poet.

Throughout his career, Cumming's subject matter focused upon geometric abstractions loosely based on still-life and poetic figurative scenes, which for many years flowed from the time he spent among the crofters and fisherfolk of Lewis in 1949.
