The Banking Company in Aberdeen had issued notes of £20 denomination in its early days but this example is a printer's proof by Lizars of Edinburgh of a completely new style of note.
Despite the Banking Company in Aberdeen's early success its situation had changed dramatically by 1849. It now found itself crippled by bad debts and on the point of collapse. It was saved from extinction by a take-over from the Glasgow-based Union Bank.
