Founded in Inverness in 1838 the Caledonian Banking Company had a chequered history of almost 70 years until its absorption by the Bank of Scotland in 1907.
In its early years the Caledonian Banking Company was a progressive organisation which operated 20 branches from the Moray Firth to Caithness and even expanded eastwards into Aberdeenshire, a county already well supplied with banks. In the early 20th century lax control over investments and lending added to the Caledonian's already increasing problems and hastened its demise as an independent company.
