About MeHamada met Bernard Leach in Japan, and then travelled with him to Cornwall in 1920 to help him set up his pottery at St. Ives. He inspired many potters with his informal approach to decorating. This piece is typical of the work Hamada produced. Here he has used a light grey slip over a darker grey glaze, which is revealed through a number of brushstrokes.
More About Me
Hamada was made a "Living National Treasure" in Japan in 1955, the first from the field of crafts.
