About MeThis stoneware vessel with pulled handle was made by Gugong Bong who was trained by Michael Cardew at the Pottery Training Centre in Abuja, Nigeria. It is decorated with a green glaze on the exterior and a black and red glaze on the interior.
The Centre was set up in 1951 at the request of the Nigerian government to introduce new pottery techniques and decorative skills. Cardew taught the trainees to make wheel-thrown ceramics which were kiln-fired. Most of the wares were made of stoneware, using clays local to the area. They were decorated with slips (liquid clay), a variety of glazes and applied surface decoration. Cardew left Abuja in 1965 and returned to his pottery at Wenford Bridge in Cornwall. Gugong Bong continued to work for Abuja Pottery during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
