About MeWe can assume this title refers to the Malay Muslim community of South Africa as the artist, Arthur Neville Lewis, was a South African artist. The Muslim community, sometimes referred to as Cape Malay, are descended from slaves, prisoners and political exiles transported by the Dutch East India Company to the Western Cape of South Africa (which was a colony in 1652). The workforce of this Cape colony were originally from India, Malaysia, and Indonesia, as well as Mainland Africa and Madagascar. Is this an empowering image, and is the history of the Malay people integral to how we view this artwork?Exhibitions
