The Cart, Comrie is painted in oils onto a board and is probably a study. Peploe developed a more spontaneous approach to painting in Comrie, as he was painting outside. He applies the paint thickly, simplifying forms with brighter tones in order to convey the scene with immediacy. Gone are the subtle variations in tone of his early still life works. Here, the light catches and illuminates the trees, while a bold, lilac shadow reaches out across the foreground.
