About MeLetter from Alida Spaander, daughter of Leendert Spaander, to James McBey, dated 18 Janaury 1940. Leendert founded the Artist's Hotel, Hotel Spannader, Volendam, Netherlands in 1881. The business began as a cafe but was extended to a hotel and cafe restaurant, Alida took over the business in 1919.

In the letter Alida talks about how pleased she was to receive McBey's letter and hear from him again after so many years. Alida says that she had been staying in England with "Mrs Brisere" and having a nice time, but "Mrs Brisere" was now very ill and had to have an operation.

Alida also explains that she is now running the hotel alone as her husband died, and talks about how they had a very hard time during the War. She ends the letter by saying that she hopes McBey will pay her a visit next time he comes to Holland, telling him, "I am a little older now but still the same little Alida."

Alida also tells McBey that her father is still living, now 93 years, old and signs the letter, "much love from your old friend Alida Spaander."

This object is part of an archive that belonged to Marguerite McBey. As a result of her generosity, Aberdeen Art Gallery holds the largest archive of James McBey's work, including prints, drawings, sketchbooks, oil paintings and memorabilia such as this letter.
