About MePhilipson first tried the format of the triptych when painting three watercolours. He commented:
"It was not planned in advance. I had been working on these three watercolours in sequence for the first time. One day, when I had them laid side by side on the floor to study them, I realised that they were in a fact a single statement in three parts."
He continued to work on the theme of triptychs of burnings, in both watercolour and, as here, in oils.
