About MeAn earthenware jar with bulbous body and single plain loop handle. it is glazed all over in various shades of blue, green, purple, black, brown, yellow and cream, which merge together to create a mottled effect.
This is an early piece of work by Michael Cardew, dating to the time when he was working at Winchcombe Pottery near Cheltenham, England, from 1926 to 1938. Cardew took over the disused Greet Pottery in 1926, running it as a rural pottery producing domestic wares. He employed Elijah Comfort, who had previously worked as a thrower at Greet Pottery and Sidney Tustin, who learned how to throw at the Winchcombe. They were later joined by Ray Finch who eventually took over Winchcombe Pottery after Cardew returned to Cornwall in 1939.
