About MeStoneware jug with rounded flared body tapering to a short concave neck. Thick rolled and everted rim with integral lip and pulled strap handle.
The jug is fully glazed in a blue-white slip with blue wood ash glaze and splashes of iron slip on the exterior. It is decorated with combed vertical bands which create panels around the body and abstract combed marks running down the body from rim to foot. Combing is a decorative technique where a comb of wood, or another material, is drawn through the slip before it is fully dry to create a pattern. This technique was frequently used at Winchcombe.
Eddie Hopkins joined Winchcombe Pottery in 1971 and by the 1990s was the pottery's chief thrower. He was able to throw both fast and accurately, becoming the mainstay of Winchcombe's production ware, which rarely carries the individual maker's mark. This jug, marked with his monogram, is a good example of Hopkins' individual style.
