About MeThis shallow fluted bowl which stands on a short foot ring is glazed all over in a turquoise blue and speckled blue wood ash glaze from Dalemain, the country house near Ullswater.
Hughes frequently used ash gathered from various places close to his pottery in Cumbria to achieve rich colours of glaze when the piece was fired at a high temperature in a reduction kiln. Hughes wrote in 1996 that he believed this bowl was a good example of the colour and quality which could be achieved with ash derived from the great fireplace at Dalemain.
