The rapid growth of Aberdeen in the early 19th century meant that the city's banking needs were no longer adequately served by the existing local banks, the Banking Company in Aberdeen and the Aberdeen Commercial Bank.
The relative elaborateness of these notes compared with earlier issues would have helped to draw attention to the newly-established Town and County Bank.
