About MeThis is an "Order of the Medjidieh" breast badge, Second Class. Instituted in 1851, the Order was awarded in five classes, with the First Class being the highest. The Order was issued in considerable numbers by Sultan Abdülmecid as a reward for distinguished service to members of the British Army and the Royal Navy, and the French Army who came to the aid of the Ottoman Empire during the Crimean War against Russia. The Order was often conferred on non-Turkish nationals. This badge is made of silver with gold applique. It is shaped as a seven-pointed star with each ray as triple quills decorated with marcasite, and connected by seven small crescents and five-pointed stars between them. This is superimposed on a larger star with each ray designed as pentadruple quills decorated with marcasite. The centre presents a gold-bordered circle filled with red enamel and inscribed with Arabic letters and numbers: "Zeal, Devotion, Loyalty, 1268 "(Arabic year for AD 1852). In the centre of the star is Sultan Abdülmecid's tughra. The reverse has a circular Ottoman Turkish mark reading the words "Darphane-i Amire", which is the name of the National Mint in Istanbul. This mark is enclosed between a crescent and a star. Attached to the reverse of the badge is an intact pin and two sash suspensions.Alexander Cassie
