About MeCopy of letter by James McBey to Mr Mayer, partner of P. & D. Colnaghi & Co. Ltd., dated 19th September, 1941. The letter begins as follows.

''Dear Mr. Mayer,

A few weeks have elapsed since I got your letter postmarked 23rd July, but I was living on a farm in Connecticut and I had to wait until I was in a position to go into the details of your lists.

I wrote fairly plainly on the 12th May to which letter you take exceptions. I sympathise with you all in the conditions under which you have to carry on, but it is what happened before the outbreak of war that prompted my letter.''

In the second half of the letter McBey shows the details of Colnaghi's debts to McBey from their purchase of approximately 600 etchings and subsequent bankruptcy.

Typed on both sides of paper with hand-written additions. This copy was made for Herbert W. J. Paton.

This object is part of an archive that belonged to Marguerite McBey. As a result of her generosity, Aberdeen Art Gallery holds the largest archive of James McBey's work, including prints, drawings, sketchbooks, oil paintings and memorabilia such as this letter.
