About MeWhilst at Edinburgh College of Art, Barns-Graham's tutor drew her attention to St.Ives as a place which would suit her delicate health and where she would meet like-minded artists. When Barns-Graham settled there in 1940 she soon felt at home in Cornwall, where parts of the coastline reminded her of the west of Scotland.

During the 1960s, Barns-Graham became interested in formal arrangements and explored the repetition and rhythm of sequences of squares and circles in her painting. She used colour for its emotive potential and the angry red in this composition reinforces the idea of a protest as indicated by the title of the work.
