About MeThis stoneware jar has a bulbous body , tapering to the foot and a short neck. It is glazed in a pale green celadon with white, orange and black wood ash glaze on the exterior. Celadon is a type of glaze which originated in China. It requires a small amount of iron oxide to give the finished colour. Svend Bayer often combines celadon with a wood ash glaze, which achieves rich mottled colours when fired at a high temperature.
Svend Bayer was an apprentice at Michael Cardew's Wenford Bridge Pottery before travelling widely throughout Japan, Korea and South East Asia, studying wood-fired kilns. In 1975 he established his own pottery at Sheepwash in Devon, making wood-fired stoneware, incorporating local clays.
