About MeThis woodfired stoneware jug has a bulbous body tapering to a narrower base and neck. The top half of the body has an incised design of hundreds of tiny ovals giving a rough texture and five spiral circles stamped around the upper centre of the body. There are five small shell imprints below the base of the handle. There are also four pairs of small shell imprints evenly spaced around the body just above the base.
The jug is glazed in a pale greyish-green celadon with an orange and dark brown wood ash glaze on the exterior, creating a distinctive mottled appearance.
Svend Bayer was an apprentice at Michael Cardew's Wenford Bridge Pottery before travelling widely throughout Japan, Korea and South East Asia, studying wood-fired kilns. In 1975 he established his own pottery at Sheepwash in Devon, making wood-fired stoneware, incorporating local clays.
