About MeThis stoneware bulbous vase with open top has four lugs on the shoulders. The exterior is glazed in a wood ash glaze, creating a mottled beige and brown effect. The interior has a celadon glaze, ranging in colour from pale green to olive green. Iron oxide is added to the glaze to achieve a range of colours - the greater amount of iron oxide added, the darker the colour achieved.
The vase was fired twice and laid on its side on shells during the second firing, creating partial imprints of the shells on the vase.
Svend Bayer was an apprentice at Michael Cardew's Wenford Bridge Pottery before travelling widely throughout Japan, Korea and South East Asia, studying wood-fired kilns. In 1975 he established his own pottery at Sheepwash in Devon, making wood-fired stoneware, incorporating local clays.
