About MeStoneware ovoid jar with bulbous body tapering to a narrow foot and short neck. Four evenly spaced lug handles around the shoulder. One side of the body is lightly glazed in pale grey and the other side is covered with a wood ash glaze creating a rough texture. The interior is unglazed.
Svend Bayer was an apprentice at Michael Cardew's Wenford Bridge Pottery before travelling widely throughout Japan, Korea and South East Asia, studying wood-fired kilns. In 1975 he established his own pottery at Sheepwash in Devon, making wood-fired stoneware, incorporating local clays.
