About MeThis large bulbous stoneware jar has a short neck and thick rim. The greyish-white body is decorated with brown and black wood ash glaze. There are three distinct shell-shaped marks on one side. These are caused by placing the pot on its side on top of scallop shells during firing in the kiln.
Svend Bayer was an apprentice at Michael Cardew's Wenford Bridge Pottery before travelling widely throughout Japan, Korea and South East Asia, studying wood-fired kilns. In 1975 he established his own pottery at Sheepwash in Devon, making wood-fired stoneware, incorporating local clays.
