About MeIn 1841 the family living at Old Forest, Rhynie, was the Smith family. James Smith and his wife Agnes Smith, nee Wright who had five children – William (born 1812), Anne (born 1814) James (born 1818) Margaret (born 1824) and Christen or Christina (born 1828). These names correspond to the first five initials on lines 9 and 10 on the sampler.

This sampler was likely stitched by Christina Smith in 1844 when she was aged 15 or 16.

Christina Smith married farmer John Cruickshank in 1867. She had two daughters, Jessie and Christina.

Alphabets, numerals and family initials are interspersed with bands of various stitch patterns on this sampler.

The lower section comprises motifs including flowers, a tree, a peacock, a castle, a dog, grapes, a crown and a bird.

There is a strawberry border around the edges sewn in unusual colours.
