About MeNeedlework was an important component of young girls’ education for many centuries, with samplers often used to improve and demonstrate skill.
This linen cross stitch and eyelet stitch sampler worked in red and green wool was made by Isabella Bruce aged 10 years in about the late 1830s.
The sampler comprises uppercase alphabets, numerals and family initials interspersed with horizontal borders demonstrating different stitched designs.
The sewer's parents' initials JB IS and the name of her teacher Mrs Robertson are stitched at the bottom..
