About MeThis lilac cloak was worn by Margaret Hird (nee Dempster) on her wedding day. She married local businessman J. D. Hird at MacDuff Parish Church, in June 1903. Miss Dempster was a dressmaker and clearly kept up-to-date with the latest styles, as her outfit follows exactly the fashions for 1903.The wool circular cloak is decorated with grey braid and metallic thread. Elaborate decoration like this was known as passementerie and was very popular on skirts, bodices, and cloaks around 1900. This cape is also quilted on the inside for extra warmth.
