About MeThis earthenware two-handled brown crock has a bulbous oviform body which tapers to the foot. It is glazed in a thick brown mottled glaze with a meandering cream slip abstract decoration.
Michael Cardew bought Winchcombe Pottery in Gloucestershire in 1926. It was on the site of the former Greet Pottery, which had produced agricultural wares until it closed in 1914. Cardew continued to use traditional methods and local clays, expanding the pottery's repertoire and reviving traditional English slipware decoration.
In 1939 he moved to Wenford Bridge in Cornwall before a period of teaching in a college in Ghana.
