About MeThis very large store jar and cover is made from Fremington clay, a local clay from which Clive Bowen makes most of his work.

The large ovoid body, which gently tapers towards neck and foot, has been created from two pieces which are joined in the mid section, immediately beneath 3 bands of distinct potting rings.

Both the jar and its cover are wood-fired and glazed in yellow and brown slips (liquid clay). the jar is decorated with free flowing hand-painted splashed loops of green, iron brown (becoming almost pink in places) and paler yellow glazes applied around the main body. The lower section is decorated with irregular yellow banding and finger trailed yellow and green zig zag pattern. There is a band of dark brown oval dots around the neck.

The cover is similarly decorated with dark brown and yellow mottled glazes with concentric banding and a finger trailed zig zag pattern in green.

Bowen built his own wood-fired kilns for the production of domestic earthenwares at his North Devon pottery. He makes a wide selection of useful pieces for the preparation, cooking and serving of food ranging from giant store jars to everyday pots and dishes.
