About MeThis store jar and cover are made from Fremington clay, a local material from which Clive Bowen makes most of his work at his North Devon Pottery. Bowen built his own wood-fired kilns for the production of domestic earthenwares and makes a wide selection of items for the preparation, cooking and serving of food ranging from giant store jars to everyday pots and dishes.

Both pieces are thrown on a wheel, wood-fired and then decorated in the tradition of English slipware using a honey gold slip (liquid clay) over brown glaze. Combining the techniques of finger combing and sgraffito (scratching) Bowen has decorated the jar with three motifs - a leaping fish, a leafy plant (used twice) and a prawn - each set within individual panels. These motifs are a frequent choice of decoration on Bowen's store jars. the neck and foot of the jar are also decorated with brown banding and the cover is similarly decorated with sgraffito banding and zig-zags.
