About MeAlthough the first coins minted for a Scottish King did not appear until well into the 12th century coinage did exist in Scotland before then; hoards from the Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Viking periods have been unearthed in different parts of the country. One early hoard from Caldale, near Kirkwall, Orkney contained 300 silver pennies of Cnut, the Dane who became king of England in 1016.

A profile portrait of the King in helmet and armour can be seen surrounded by the inscription CNUT RECX (King Cnut). The coin was minted in Lincoln.
