About MeThis sherd of pottery was found during an excavation at the site of the Carmelite friary in Aberdeen. It is from a stoneware bowl which was made in Siegburg in Germany. This type of bowl was common in the late 15th and early 16th centuries.
The bowl is made from a smooth grey stoneware which is clay which has been fired to over 1200 degrees centigrade, fusing the particles together to give this smooth, watertight fabric. The bowl had an upright rim, covered with a brown glaze.
