About MeThis sherd of pottery was found during excavations at the Carmelite friary in Aberdeen in 1994. Made in Scarborough between the mid-12th and 14th centuries, it is the tip of a shield from a jug with three-dimensional decoration, called a knight jug.
Good quality earthenwares (pottery fired to around 800 degrees centigrade) were made at Scarborough on the east coast of Yorkshire. They were decorated with lustrous green glazes combined with applied decoration, including three-dimensional designs.
