About MeEdward Hughes decorated this side plate by 'finger wiping' a greenish-white slip glaze in zig-zag bands under a dark brown hawthorn ash glaze.
Hughes frequently incorporated wood ash, obtained from local hardwoods, in his glazes. When fired at a high temprature the glazes achieved rich mottled colours, reflecting the Cumbrian landscape where he lived and worked.
