About MeSmall circular plate glazed with an iron slip ground with yellow-green slip and celadon ash glaze 'finger wiped' to form a pattern of swirling and intersecting ribbons of colour.
Edward Hughes had a great love of English slipware and most of his decorative techniques are slipware in origin. Here he has run his finger through the wet glazes to create the swirling wave-like pattern. Hughes was also inspired by Michael Cardew and his influence is seen in similarity of the pattern on this plate to the decoration on some of Cardew's pieces in the Collections, such as ABDMS095708.19.
